Decor ideas

Today I’m showcasing a contemporary Australian beach house photographed by Hannah Blackmore, a well known Sydney photographer – you may have seen some of her work featured in Adore magazine.

This home features many elements I incorporate in my own work, natural stone floors, relaxed oversized modern sofas, freestanding baths and lots of texture. I love the interesting coastal vignettes - this stylish beach house is full of beautiful inspiration and clever ideas.

The Best 'Cleanse' or 'Detox' is a Healthy Diet!

Posted by om 0 comments
You have probably heard the saying “Diets Don’t Work”, which is because most of them have you completely eliminate foods, and thus, nutrients that have a vital function in maintaining health and your happiness. There are diets that eliminate “carbs”, low-fat diets, gluten-free fad diets, and hundreds of others. The truth is that Americans are very good at following diets for a limited period of time and are champs when it comes to losing weight. The problem is that the majority of people are not able to follow that strict lifestyle for extended periods of time, and therefore, end up regaining the lost weight, and sometimes gaining even more. So, if food-based diet plans fail to show long-term success in weight loss, then why on earth would a short term liquid based diet, cleanse, or “detox” work?

Detox diets and cleanses have been around for many decades and the main idea behind them is to get people into a “healthy” frame of mind. If you can trick yourself into thinking that your body is being cleared of toxins, perhaps you will be more inclined to eat healthier when you do introduce real food and start an exercise regime. However, most often, people will do a detox for 5-7 days, lose weight, may feel better, and may “clear out” their system… and therefore, think the detox is working! The reality is you are losing weight because you are consuming very few calories and taking in much more fiber than your body is used to- which will get things “moving” and cause you to lose weight quickly due to lost water. Most people don’t eat anywhere near the recommendation for fiber (>30 grams/day), so, of course adding lots of fiber (as long as you are drinking liquids- which cleanses are!) will get things moving no matter how you do it. It’s not the magic of the cleanse diet; you experience more regularity because you are increasing your fiber and liquid intake.

Once you lose the initial amount of weight and try to transition back to a normal diet, you will mostly likely have a difficult time continuing to lose weight. The only way you will be successful at losing weight and maintaining your goal weight is if you have completely changed the way you think about food. In order to be successful, you need to break your old habits that led to weight gain in the first place. You must  have a good grasp on what healthy foods and food groups you need to include in your diet, exercise regularly, and be mentally strong (this is incredibly important for keeping up a healthy diet & exercise routine).

The Kelly Cleanse Diet: If you really have the urge to get into a healthy frame of mind, here is my cleansing plan for you: Pick a week where all you eat is fresh fruits, TONS of vegetables, plain whole grains (buckwheat, brown rice, quinoa, amaranth, oats, etc), and lean natural sources of protein (fish, eggs, soybeans, nuts, seeds, etc). Once you do this for a week you should feel like you have been “cleansed” of processed foods, and can slowly begin to add back sauces, non-fat and low-fat dairy or dairy-alternatives, and more processed foods like whole wheat bread, tofu, yogurt, kefir, etc.

My recommendation: The best cleanse is healthy eating. If you are eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, minimally processed dairy and dairy alternatives, and lean sources of protein, there is no reason why you would ever need to “cleanse.” If you are sticking to appropriate portions and including physical activity every day, there is also no need to “go on a diet.” You should think of healthy eating as what you do, not a limited time installment in your life. As far as “detox” diets go- your liver is the best “detoxifier” there is! Your liver can get rid of ethanol (alcohol), which is toxic to the human body. If it can get rid of that, it can pretty much rid the body of any minor toxins that you may come across in your mostly healthy diet. Here are a few of my healthy diet rules:

1.    Eat whole, natural foods as often as possible.
2.    Eat as many non-starchy veggies as possible.
3.    Don’t eliminate any food group, especially grains!
4.    Don’t restrict foods you love, just eat them rarely and in an appropriate portion.
5.    Stick to proper portion sizes (schedule an appointment with me to find out what your individual portion sizes should look like! ;-)
6.    Get Moving!!!!!!

The Spanish Frontier

Bohemian Chic

I have spent over a month travelling around Spain so I got to visit most of the tourist hot spots but never made it to the island of Formentera just off the Spanish Coast. I have heard the scenery is gorgeous - beautiful white sandy beaches and azure seas making this little island a perfect holiday destination. I have seen lots of great villas and boutique hotels featured on blogs and travel mags, these ones in particular, caught my eye - I love the rustic simplicity and the open plan. I like the quirky mix of French antiques, Spanish farmhouse style and exposed timber beams.

Seaside Pastels - Get The Look

Seaside Pastels

Re-create this look

Seaside Style

Pastel seaside shades are not really a look that we use much of here in Australia.
I only started seeing this 'Preppy Palm Beach' look since I started blogging.
Since then I have really fallen for it - partly because it's so girly,
and secondly because it's so fresh and different.
I would love to decorate an Australian white weatheboard beach house
top to toe in this look - all white sofas and painted timber furniture
with pops of bright pastels
Shabby Chic meets Southern Preppy!
Australian magazine editors would have a field day.
I just need to find an enthusiastic client who shares the vision.
How much fun would we have putting it together??!

Light Reflections

My favourite time to walk along the beach is either early in the morning or late in the afternoon just before the sun goes down. The light is soft and glowing and throws long shadows that dance in the waves.

It's the best time to take the camera with you and snap away!

Ocean Blues

I have been back a few days now from my lovely tropical holiday and despite the fact I come back to gorgeous Spring weather, a pretty seaside town, pristine beaches, a lush green garden and peaceful, tranquil surroundings I am still suffering from the post holiday blues - why is that? What's wrong with me??? I have so much to be grateful for. Work has died off because all my clients knew I was off on holidays so I think I just need an exciting project to get stuck into and get the creative juices flowing. Anyway I managed to cheer myself up by organising my summer holidays, making some plans for Christmas and flicking through some old photo albums. I think I am missing those seafood buffets so I might just cook up some Atlantic salmon with an avocado and mango salad to transport us back to balmy evenings dining on the terrace at the Mirage!

Friday Favorites

Posted by om 0 comments

Just about anything and everything that I do is Holiday inspired...in one way or another. But this little collection of Friday Favorites is especially so. Halloween is near & dear to my heart...so close it is to my birthday, and it's also right in the middle of this glorious season so rich with color and romance. And being that this is the last Friday that I'll have before the magical and mystical All Hallows Eve, I figured I'd share the love.

To start with are these delicate doilies, framed and matted in black. Lovingly crocheted by the skilled hands of someone's Great Granny, I love their almost spider web like appearance.

This chocolate tuxedo pie with pecan crust was double take worthy. Aaron was rushing around, looking for packing material or something, and as he was walking past me behind the couch, he could see my screen. I heard his feet screech to a halt on the wood floor and he reversed two steps to grab a second look. I have a long list of recipes that I "must make", but seriously, this one is a "must must make"! I'll be turning my kitchen into a black tie affair one of these Autumn evenings.

You know how much I adore old photos. They are way up at the top of my favorite collectibles list. And to narrow the list even further...old "Holiday" photos make me melt! Black & white shots of the family Christmas tree, oh jeez...the aluminum trees from the 1950's are to die for...kids and their Easter baskets, holding stuffed bunnies...and I especially love old Halloween photos like this , kids in their costumes, they often have a creepy quality and the creepiness wasn't on purpose. Like this was just two girls in their pretty dresses, showing off their homemade masks...but the sepia tone, the age of the pic, and that barnyard shack in this rural setting just creeps me out. I love it!

This photo made me laugh out loud. Seriously. I'm telling myself that the dog has a great sense of humor! Like he is fully aware of the joke. I'd like to imagine that he planned this out...his mom & dad entering the room to find him just like this...LOL!

I adore these earrings from Luminoddities.
They're made from real, antique tintype images. Again, the age of the images, and the careful cropping just make them creepy. All we see is a single hand...his and hers.I really could plan am entire outfit around these. I love the time worn brass and the black buttons. Perfect accessories for a Hallowe'en get together.

And at last, I LOVE these! I'm sure you can use them all year round, but to me they scream Halloween. A super simple diy craft. Take a pic of your house, or find an old pic, or take a pic of the spookiest house in town, even is you have to transform it into a spooky house...it could start out baby pink...all you have to do is print it out sepia toned! I just love how they glow. You can make a tiny village on a windowsill.

Ok, thanks again for stopping in to see my Friday Favorites. I wish you all a happy weekend!
xo, Jenny
