Friday Favorites

Posted by om 0 comments

Hi guys! Happy Friday! Nope, your eyes are not playing tricks on you...Friday Favorites are back! Jeez, it has been a while! Things got so hectic around here with the paper collection, and book stuff, and then of course the holidays...overall, there was just too much stuff happening, and I could scarcely find a moment to focus on raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens...or any other favorite things.
So, I'm hoping that the return of Friday Favorites will also signal a return to a semi-normal schedule here at home. I LOVE sharing my weekly eye candy with you guys...giving you a place to do some internet window shopping for wish list types of things, gift ideas, recipes, etc...
I'm so flattered by all of the messages I received, asking for the resurrection of my Friday Favorites! I'm gonna try my best to consistently bookmark and collect all of the inspiring things that come across my desk during the week. My inspiration will be your inspiration.

Well, let's kick this week's favorites off with the adorable Valentine printables seen above, from Sugar and Charm. Yes...super cool stickers adhered to individually boxed donuts. So sweet! And they're cute, but not too cute. You could still get away with handing them out to the fellas in your life.

Now I'm pretty sure I've blogged one or both of these TPS file cabinets from CB2 in the past, but who cares?!! They are so darn cute, and they just so happened to end up on my radar again this week! I honestly don't know how I would choose between them. Most people figure that my fave color is pink...when at heart I'm an aqua girl. But in this case I'm actually leaning toward the pink one. I've got the aqua Raskog cart from IKEA...and if I went with this pink file cabinet, the studio furniture relationships would be much more harmonious...I think Raskog and TPS would end up being BFF's.

This yarn bombed bus stop made me smile really big! It's adorable, hilarious, and incredibly impressive!! First off...the hat is a genius idea. Add the fact that it's pink...and WOW! This is yarn bombing at it's most adorable for sure!!

And then we have this old timey sleepy kitty photo. Need I say more?

This is Magical Maryann, who has more style in her fabulous pinkie than an entire graduating class at FIT. I'm a big fan of the Advanced Style blog, which is where you'll find a great featurette on Maryann's style. Make sure to click the link and watch the video. You'll love her simple, nearly zen-like approach to cultivating personal style.

Ok...I think these are one of those love or hate types of things. As for me...LOVE! Liquid Gold Nike Air Max! Just ridiculously fab! I'd kick 'em with an all black outfit. They were retailing for about $140. But of course...before you got the chance to even reach for your wallet, they were all sold out...Everywhere. Currently they can be found on ebay going for crazy amounts...like seriously, 4 times the original retail price!

Ok, Boardwalk Empire! From the very beginning! I know that we're extremely late to the party...but the long delay has only amped up our enthusiasm for this fantastic show.
People always ask me if I watch certain tv shows...and more often than not my answer is "Nope...we don't have Fancy cable."  Being that we don't watch much tv, we just opted for basic cable. Sure, we work from home, but we're usually very focussed on the task at hand, so it would be impossible to watch tv while doing work. So all day and most of the night we listen to music. And working from home also means that it's hard to determine when the work day ends and when leisure time begins...so the tv will often remain off while we continue to work into the evening. When we do turn on the tv it is for The Walking Dead...and Breaking Bad when that was still on the air.
But one time as a promotion we got a free month of HBO...and that was just enough time for us to get fully caught up to date with the show Girls. But then the season ended and so did our free month of HBO. We looked at the line-up at that point in time and decided against getting HBO for real. Then when we were out in California a couple weeks ago, the hotel room had HBO and our stay coincided with the season premier of Girls. Ok...long story short...we got reeled in. Last sunday we were here at home, bummed, just knowing that Girls was on and we were sitting here without Fancy cable. So we looked into the pricing, and it's not bad at all. We pulled the trigger...and now we are officially FANCY cable people. Ok...here's where the story gets awesome for us. We discovered HBO GO...which is the internet version of HBO. And it's included in your regular HBO package. Pretty much everything that was ever on HBO is on the site! Every episode of every series is sitting there just waiting for us to stream away. Our first target was Boardwalk Empire...a show we had been dying to watch. Oh man...it's soooo good. We've been watching it in bed on our laptop right before we go to sleep. We're on episode 5 right now and we've got 40 something to go. We feel absolutely spoiled rotten. There is so much about the show that is great, but even on the most basic level it works for us. We just feel intrinsically connected to Atlantic City. It's right in our backyard...it's this place that your friends and family will frequent on any given tuesday...and yet, it's got this crazy mythical history. Any show or movie set in 1920's America will be interesting enough. Locating it in Atlantic City is just plain bananas. We are hooked on this show. And oh jeez...we get to watch it straight through...none of that 'tune in next week' stuff.
Ok, that's all. I can't believe that I ended this post with an hour long essay on HBO! ha!

I'll be back soon with more of our regular scheduled programming.
xo, Jenny...and Aaron says hi!

Palm Beach City Guide

I could happily see myself living in Palm Beach.

I love a bit of glitz and glamour.
I like anything pink, pretty and pastel.
I like a splash of gold,
chic retro furniture, bar carts
and poolside cocktails at five!

Remember, It's a Lot Easier to Eat 100 Calories than it is to Burn it Off!

Posted by om 0 comments

This blog may seem pretty blunt and harsh, but it's important to read if you are not seeing results in losing weight. Hard work= hard body!

Most people overestimate how active they actually are. With my clients I am a stickler when it comes to activity. I want them to get in their recommended 10,000 steps (~5 miles/day) WITHOUT including their planned exercise in that. So, even if you take a spin class or run for an hour, I want you walking 10,000 steps too. People nowadays are MUCH more sedentary than they were even a few decades ago. If you went to a big college, you hopefully walked everywhere you had to go, and it was no big deal. Now that you are out of that environment, it's like you have to plan a walk as your exercise. That shouldn't be. If you are able, and it is a safe environment, you should definitely walk anywhere you need to go if it is <1 mile away (I would argue even 2 miles away isn't bad). A 1 mile walk will take you less than 20 minutes, so if you have the time, don't be lazy, and walk! You'll benefit too for the fact that you'll be saving gas $$$ and not contributing to pollution.

As I have posted about before, people who "go to the gym" but are sedentary the rest of the day may not be any healthier than someone who doesn't do a planned workout but has a job that they are at least up and moving. Sitting is bad for you, so try to avoid it, especially after meals.

No matter how active you are, you still need to be conscious of your food choices and realize it is much easier to eat calories than burn them off. Even if weight isn't your concern, or you are trying to gain weight, focus on healthy foods so that you can keep your energy levels high and your body in good health. I may burn 130 calories on my 1.33 mile walk to work, but I usually eat a KIND bar on the way home... so that's 200 calories- net gain of 70 calories. If people who are trying to lose weight partake in similar actions, just that 70 extra calories per day can theoretically lead to slightly less than 1 pound gained per month. So, if you are the type of person who rewards yourself after a hard workout like spin with a 400 calorie smoothie, you are probably offsetting the calories you burned during that workout.

My point is, I want you to be active, but I don't want you to think that your activity level is permission to eat whatever you want. Plus, machines and instructor generalizations about calories burned during a workout tend to be an overestimate for most people. Most of those estimations would be for a large man who is working very hard. If you are barely breaking a sweat and not out of breath for the majority of a one-hour class, I doubt you burned anywhere near 500 calories.

Keep in mind one average-sized homemade chocolate chip cookie is about 100 calories, so just think about running at least a mile to burn that off. When you are at a Superb owl party this weekend, think about each item before you consume it:

One regular beer= 150 calories
8 oz wine= 200 calories
1 hot chicken wing= 100 calories
10 potato chips= 100 calories
2 tbsp hummus= 80 calories
6 wheat thins= >50 calories

So again, think before you eat and sit less, move more!

Strawberry ice-cream

I have a major summer crush on strawberry ice-cream.

Somehow that melt-in-you-mouth
fresh, fruity burst of flavour
sums up all the good things that summer has to offer!

I have a total weakness for traditional shingled houses like this one in the Hamptons.
So when I saw this one was for sale I had to check it out.
It sits on almost an acre near Sagg Beach and is listed for a mere $6.5 million!

The listing says: “On a private lane, this 6,500 sq. ft. traditional Hamptons home has ocean and pond views as well as a pool and pool house”. Sounds good so far! It also features soaring ceilings, beautiful hand-hewn barn beams and dramatic windows. The focal point of this dramatic open first floor entertaining area is the stone fireplace and multiple seating areas. The house has 5 bedrooms and 5.5 baths. That would do me very nicely!

Vintage photo party favor treat cups

Posted by om 0 comments

If you have been following this blog for a while you may know that we are big big fans of, and collectors of vintage party decor and ephemera. You can almost feel the residual magic on these old party things...even if it's simply a vintage photograph from a birthday party that was long long ago. We especially love party favors and treat cups. We have some adorable vintage crepe paper treat cups that we found at flea markets, ebay, antique & junk shops.
We just love treat cups for the obvious reason: they're adorable!
But we've also got an emotional connection to these party things...or you can even call them celebratory objects. We just love that these things exist for the pure and simple purpose of celebrating! And that is definitely the kind of energy that we'd like to bottle up...or more accurately...it's the kind of energy that we covet an collect and fill our home with. And hopefully, it also shows up in our artwork!

So when I got my hands on some of these adorable chipboard treat cups from Melissa Frances, I was so excited to make them into something cute, vintagey, and sweet. Well, I said that I got my hands on treat cups...but it was actually the makings of treat cups...which is even better. All the structural elements are provided...I just had to add some magic to them

I once again used our own paper collection as source material (which I will never grow bored of!)...namely, I used our "Hooray for Cake" paper. I just love that it's a page full of assorted mini cakes to use however you want. For this project I cut out a few cakes and adhered them to cardstock to thicken them up. I then sealed them with gloss mod podge and cut them out...essentially creating my own chipboard elements.

So this is how the treat cups came...almost like those ready to assemble boxed gingerbread house kits you can find nowadays. We painted the chipboard pieces, let them dry, and then did some speckling with some umber, cream, and pink. And once that dried, I did a bit of an "antique wash" around the edges by just brushing on some tan/brown watered down paint, and then I blotted it with a paper towel.

Then I assembled my prepped pieces using Aleene's Quick Dry Tacky Glue.

I was really happy with how easily they came together. The Aleene's does exactly what it says it does: it dried rather quickly.

Once they were assembled and dry I looked them over and decided that there wasn't enough pink in my speckling. So I went back and added some tiny pink dots with a detail brush. I felt like I needed the extra pink dots in order to balance with the pink elements I'd be adding.

Next, I punched holes on each side, and added "handles". I had these adooorable vintage pink and aqua metallic pipe cleaners in my stash for years...which turned out to be perfect for this project. And then on the front bottom portion of each cup I added a little strip of gold glitter washi tape.

I made photocopies of two of my favorite old photos of my mom on her second birthday...and with those I did the same as I did with the cakes...adhered them to cardstock, sealed them, and cut them out.  And to do those little wood veneer banners...I just painted them with acrylic paint, added a bit of an "antique wash" to the edges, and wrote the words with a fine tip black sharpie marker.

If you happen to own our book our book you may recognize the photos that I used on these treat cups from one of our Art Journaling pages titled "I Wonder What She Wished For?"

To finish them off, I just added some crepe paper streamer around the inside of the cups, and tied a little bit of contrasting lace to each handle. These were really fun to make! They'd make adorable place card holders for a birthday party or get-together. I'm obsessed with vintage photos...but you can certainly make treat cups just as cute using new photos as well! Maybe for baby's first birthday! Or imagine them for a puppy party! With tiny dog treats inside!? Cute overload!

I hope you'll give these a try!

Thanks so much for visiting! Feel free to pin or share this on facebook!

Love from the NJ Shore!
