Hamptons style - light & breezy

If you're looking for a classic Hamptons beach style feel, start with color. The idea is to keep things light and breezy. Choose rustic wood flooring that has a sun-bleached look. Stick with white or neutral colored walls. Linen upholstery looks natural and casual, perfect for relaxing after a day in the sun. If you like the look of wicker and rattan choose well made good quality pieces that will last the distance.

I'm THAT girl

Posted by om 0 comments

Ok, so if you've been reading my blog since the beginning or even for only a few months you would know that my heart (figuratively) and my home (literally) are filled with vintage dolls, holiday collectibles, treasures, pastel colors, bits of foil, old tags, signs and letters from old advertisements and industries and the things our parents and grandparents would remember from their childhood. Discovered in the wood planked aisles of the old Five & Dime. The pretty dolls temptingly propped up in the window...the Easter Baskets and candy containers...The magical displays changing with each approaching holiday seasons. And candy for every single season...foiled wrapped...billows of tulle and colored cellophane...the promise of chocolate wonderment inside.
And these ephemeral treasures were never meant to last past the morning of the big day...their wrappers were to be torn and tossed...candies eaten.
Yet somehow a tiny fraction of these remain today. Apparently their recipients valued them as much more than mere wrapping or vessels for candy and treats. Maybe they were kept on a shelf as decor in bedrooms for a while, and later they were tucked away, stored in an attic or closet...to one day be acquired by a new admirer of old beauty. An admirer who's more than familiar with ebay and flea markets and junk shops.
Well, I am that admirer...I'm that girl...and I know you may be that girl...or boy.
Our homes are waiting for these objects to find their place among their kind on our shelves. We dust them off, hot glue their eyes or hair back in place, and invite them to the party here for as long as they want. Where dolls and bunnies and plastic ballerinas, doll heads, foil eggs, cardboard Christmas houses, tiny toy pianos, all get to reprise their starring roles for an adoring audience.

Which all leads me to my latest treasured find! She was a rare purchase...not just because she's rare but because I rarely spend a dime! Given the past 5 months or so with all the home repairs and just that awful insecure feeling Sandy has given us all, we've been pinching pennies.
But while browsing ebay last week I stopped in my tracks...eyes wide, mouth open...and that familiar flutter in my chest as I read the description. I had never in my life seen something like this! And I must tell you...not only have I been a vintage collector and ebay stalker for 18+ yrs... but Aaron and I also had an antique booth in one of the most incredible buildings in a town FULL of amazing antique shops. On a daily basis we saw anything and everything you could imagine.

The ebay seller had found it at an estate sale. She did some research into it and found that this basket, made by the Shreveport Association for the Blind, was most likely made for a fundraiser in the early 1950's. One thing the seller couldn't believe...and that I couldn't believe either...is that it was never opened! The aged and yellowed cellophane remains completely intact. Not even a little hole from a tiny inquisitive finger craving a bit of foil wrapped Easter chocolate. And not only is it amazing that it's unopened...the colors are still vibrant! So she was kept out of the light of day for sure.

Jeez, can you tell how excited I am about her?! I'm sure she'll acquire a pet name soon, just like all the rest of my fave collectibles. Right now she's hanging out on our work table in the work-in-progress studio. I'll let you know when she finds her perfect spot...and also when the studio is complete...or close enough...I'm sure the studio will never be complete...the whole idea of a studio space is that it's always in flux, right?

Ok, thanks for stopping by...I hope your day is fabulous!
xo, Jenny

Good-bye Summer Days

Posted by om 0 comments

I'm so sad it is the last day of summer ~ I am still basking in all the glory summer has to offer. Late morning wakeups, breakfast outdoors, long days at the beach and late afternoons lounging on the deck with a refreshing gin and tonic in hand. From dawn to dusk we are out on surfboards, boogie boards and bikes making the most of the last of the summer days.

Recipe Corner: Green Monster Dog Cookies

Posted by om 0 comments
Editor’s note: This recipe comes to us via the wonderful Jodi at Kol’s Notes, “One dog's blog about good food, good friends and the good life!” As always, thanks for your contributions, Jodi!

When you’ve got a dog that is a hot mess, you’ve got to get creative.

Take my Felix, for example. When we brought him home, he was all over the place: allergies, food intolerances, the itches and a butt like a stoplight, if you know what I mean.

I knew right off the bat that the regular crappy treats you get at the grocery store just weren’t going to do it for my new best buddy. This is something that seems to be happening more and more: whether your dog can’t eat store bought treats due to allergies or bladder stones or kidney and liver problems; tons of people have started making treats at home to keep spoiling their furry kids in style.

Felix has some crazy allergies, so we are always experimenting with alternative flours. A new favourite of ours is green pea flour. Adorable colour aside, this legume based flour is pretty good for you and your dogs. High in protein and fiber, green pea flour is gluten free, grain-allergy friendly and good to use in baked good for dogs with bladder stone’s like Love on a Leash’s own Finnigan. As an added bonus, these Green Monster Dog Cookies are SUPER easy to make.

Green Monster Dog Cookies

Ingredients:
2 ¼ cups Green Pea Flour
2 cups Frozen Peas, defrosted
1 ½ cups ground chicken
1 egg
Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Over medium heat, sauté ground chicken until cooked, but not brown. In a food processor or blender, mix together defrosted peas, chicken and egg.

Stir green pea flour and parsley into the pea mixture. It should be thick, but not stiff. Pour mixture onto baking sheet and spread into a thin (1/4") layer. Bake for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven. Score treats into bite sizes pieces with a knife. Return to oven and bake for another 30 minutes.

For a soft treat, remove from oven and allow cookies to cool.

For a crunchy treat, flip cookies, reduce heat to 200F and bake for another 2 - 4 hours.

Store in refrigerator.

Aqua Chic

Re-create this look

Oh, to have a house at the Hamptons ...
or even just a summer would be nice!
But when you live half way across the world that's easier said than done!
However with a little know how ~ you can re-create that look
so you that feel like you are living in the Hamptons!

If you are wanting to inject some of this classic decorating style into your home,
here are a few basic guidelines to follow...

1. Invest in a few key pieces of furniture in neutral shades,
you can change up your look with seasonal accessories.

2. If you're looking for a classic Hamptons beach style feel, start with color.
The idea is to keep things light, breezy and natural.

3. Mix contemporary pieces with rustic touches
like barn wood elements, original hardware and bead board walls.

4. Introduce some vintage pieces -
hunt around antique markets for pieces with character.
If you are working to a tighter budget
try garage sales, flea markets and local charity shops

5. Bring the outdoors inside by incorporating a coastal feel indoors.
Use seaside treasures like shells and coral along with some nautical decor.

6. Bring as much light into the room as you can.
Invest in large windows and French doors to let sunlight wash into the rooms.

Sunday Funday

Posted by om 0 comments

Ohhh boy are things getting fun around here! We've been working round the clock on so many things...orders, the house, and the stuuuudio! We are so so close to being in there like for realz! And that means that some of our prized collections will be joining us very soon...ya know, to provide moral and inspirational support while we toil away in the studio. Such as these guys above! This basket o' bunnies...they are totally ready for their new home! I wheeled them in today and just seeing them in the room made my heart flutter a bit! These poor fellas have been hidden away in boxes for the past few months and finally they'll take their places among our favorite things!

In classic Jenny style I was mixing paint while I decorated. Somehow organizing goes hand in hand with me painting a piece of furniture. I have a vintage cupboard that is waiting for a little pink...or possibly aqua...I'll know by the end of the night! ha!

Hanging shelves and displaying favorite bits, bobs, treasures and supplies. A pretty display that's totally practical and close at hand. Good stuff ready and waiting to be used in a project!

I got side tracked...saw some glitter letters that needed to be put away but I couldn't resist playing with them first.

And yes I'm all about juxtaposing...The room being filled with eardrum shattering deftones and heart warming vintage bunnies makes perfect sense to me!

Oh and jeez...all hard work calls for sweet rewards. The other night Aaron and I made a batch of Shortbread squares and oh boy were they just little bits of happiness in my mouth! Tender, buttery, not too sweet...just melted away all our troubles! Gosh...of course they are all gone...and that just means we'll have to bake more very soon.

I couldn't not include a pic of this little guy. His Uncle Walter threw his hoodie on the chair for a couple minutes and this guy instantly made a nest. Boy is he so so good at making nests...twirls around, tucks his butt, lets out a big sigh and settles in.

Right now we are taking a bit of a break...eating while watching the E! red carpet for the Oscars. We'll be able to catch Seth MacFarlane's opening bit but then we'll be promptly switching over to The Walking Dead...we've got priorities after all!! And I'll definitely be painting some furniture before bed.

And what have you guys been up to this weekend?!

Summer Brights

For me summer is all about getting outdoors and having fun!
It's about hanging out with friends
and long beach days with the kids.
It's about get-together with the neighbours
for a 'tongue-in-check' game off
crouquet, boules or backyard cricket!
It's about early mornings and late nights ~
trying to make the most of each and every day!

Animal Portraits by Emily Z

Posted by om 0 comments

I was recently pleased to be introduced to the work of artist Emily Z. Being geared in the way I am, I was especially charmed by Emily’s pet portraits. Just look at them! Bright colours, beautiful form and what seems to me to be very real and charming expression.

On her web site, Emily points out that “custom pet portraits are a colourful and personal way to celebrate your pet. They make excellent presents for pet owners, people who have recently lost their pet, or anyone else who has a soft spot for a certain furry friend. I paint cats and dogs, as well as any other animal friend you may have. They are created with oil paints on 3/4″ profile stretched canvas. Each piece is created working closely with the client to insure that the pets expression, the color scheme, and end product meet their requirements.”

Emily Z can be reached by telephone at 778-227-5307 or via e-mail.

Summer Living Alfresco

Lunch Alfresco

There is something totally delicious about eating outdoors.

The sun warming your skin, the buzz of chatter in the air, the clinking of glasses and
the laughter of kids playing and splashing in the pool.
The table is laden with Italian summertime treats like ~
homemade foccacia,
tomato, basil and mozzarella salad,
crispy pizzas straight from the pizza oven and
a chilled bottle of Pinot Grigio to wash it all down!
There's a pergola draped in vines to keep off the midday sun
and an afternoon dip in the pool to cool you down.
What a perfect setting!
