"Sprinkle every day with FUN" mixed media plaque tutorial

Hi guys! We are pretty excited to share this super cute, super easy tutorial with you today! First, having a line of scrapbooking papers is awesome...then, having them in our hands to use for our own projects is double awesome. Our heads are spinning with ideas! And like we've mentioned before, or you may have gathered as a reader of our blog, we aren't tradional scrapbookers. We LOVE all of the incredibly fun and cute scrapbooking supplies on the market, but we really like to use them in different, unique ways. Which falls into the category of "Mixed Media". We like to take a little of this, a little of that...and just make something FUN!
Today we are using the following:
-"Sprinkle every day with FUN" paper (from our collection "The Sweet Life" for Melissa Frances)
- Journaling cards (also from "The Sweet Life" collection)
- wooden circle plaque (can be found in the wood aisle at Michael's craft store)
-scissors
-Mod Podge
- 1" paint brush
- strip of contrasting paper for edge of plaque. (or you could paint it a color)
optional
-small round detail brush
-tan acrylic paint
-water
So to begin, trace a circle of "sprinkle" paper to fit your plaque, cut out your words, and your little pink haired girl.
Lay everything out to get an idea of where you want it all to sit. Cut out your plate of cupcakes from the journaling card as well.
Brush your plaque with an even coat of Mod Podge, and lay your sprinkle paper down. Rub it lightly with your finger tips or a folded up clean and dry piece of paper towel...to rub out any air bubbles. Let it dry for about a minute or two before brushing it with a top coat of Mod Podge. Letting it set up for a minute before the top coat helps to prevent wrinkles or bubbles. Let dry totally. Being that it is so cold here in New Jersey we normally have a space heater only inches from our work space...so it helps to speed up drying time. Also, a blow dryer is an artist's best friend.
If you are using a contrasting paper to trim the ege of the plaque, now is the time to do it. Just measure the thickness and cut a strip or two, lining up seams. Take your time and brush on an even coat of mod podge, pressing down as you go, rubbing out bubbles. If you have any extra paper coming off the edge, you can use a small piece of sand paper or sanding pad to lightly sand it off. Let dry a bit, and seal.
Now, "glue down" your elements. You can brush the entire plaque with a light even coat of mod podge and lay things down all at once, or you can brush the backs of each element and put them down that way. Which ever works best for you. Just be sure to push down and rub out any air bubbles. Let dry a bit, and then top coat with a thin even layer of mod podge. Let dry completely.
Now this is optional, but it's a great way to give your piece an aged glow, and it's simple. You can use a detail brush, and a mixture of tan acrylic paint and a bit of water to make an "antiquing wash". With the detail brush just float a little wash around your girl, and edges of the plaque, sorta the same way you would use Tim Holtz Distress ink. Use a dry paper towel to blot it off in areas. Use as little or as much as you'd like! You can also paint in a little "drop shadow" under your plate of cupcakes.
As a finishing touch we also added some pink Flocking powder and clear crystal glitter to our sweet lil girl's hair, and collar. And to the plate of cupcakes.
Add a little hanging hook or sawtooth bracket to the back and hang it!

And don't think we only want to see Mixed Media projects...we would LOVE to see the papers being used by the classic old school scrappers. We love traditional lay outs just as much!!
