A Taste of Lime

Posted by om 0 comments

I have just planted a Tahitian lime tree in my back garden.
I am looking forward to fresh limes over summer.
Perfect for my G and T's!

Today I'm loving this lime green inspiration to celebrate the first day of Spring!

Friday Favorites

Posted by om 0 comments

Hey guys! It's Friday. And for anyone who's keeping a close eye on the score...it's late Friday. We were working so concentratedly on a certain project that we had almost let the day slip past us entirely. And I had been wanting to share some of these Friday Favorites for a while now. Just a short time ago we stepped out of our studio and realized that the whole rest of the house was pitch dark. There we were with the overhead spotlights flooding our worktable...no clock in sight...we had no idea that night had fallen already! Well I'm glad I'm here now...and glad you guys are here too. I needed to step away for second...my vision was tilting to the myopic end of the scale. It's good to stop every so often to take a look at some of the fabulous things in life.

I love everything about the above photo project. A fun way to capture your kid's moods and expressions and make them into awesome posters! Check out the tutorial to find out just how easily you can do these...and cheap. They were printed as engineer prints at Fed Ex Kinkos for only $3.00 each. How fun would these be with pets?!

Bunnies! Need I say anymore? How incredibly cute are these customizable pieces. Get your adorable personalized necklace or bracelet from I Adorn U.

How incredibly cool is this? Rain drawings using NeverWet from Rust-Oleum. You can totally spray some outdoor surface, like concrete, with this product from Rust-Oleum and it will be rendered rain resistant. With a stencil you can create designs or block in some words that'll be invisible until they get wet. Our driveway is gravel, so...bummer. But yeah, a concrete driveway would be perfect for doing this.

Even though it was mega humid and hot here today I am already feeling my heart sing for the Fall. I'm so so ready for it and so are a ton of other peeps apparently. I've been seeing pumpkin recipes being pinned, and some coffee shops decided to put their pumpkin lattes into the rotation early. There are pics galore showing up on Instagram. I'm ready for Fall cooking and baking and for these very activities I think I just might require this wood bark pedestal stand.

This image is so darn beautiful...and until just this moment I hadn't noticed how much it captures my current emotional season. I guess by "emotional season" I mean the way that I feel as opposed to the actual time of the year that's on the calendar. See...I'm still full of the green leaves of summer...but I'm gradually transitioning into my own personal autumn. And there's that morning mist...the new day has yet to fully break. Yep...that's how I feel right now.

Ok, seriously...I have to get back to the task that had been stealing my Friday away in the first place. It's  just that important. Glad you could pop in at the water cooler for a quick chat!

Bohemian Style

boho style

Today my inner hippie self is out on show!

Not only is the bohemian look totally on trend ~
it is also a very affordable way to decorate.
A great look for a beach house rental or
a low budget makeover.
The end result will be colourful, upbeat,
eclectic and inviting ...
but won't break the bank.

...........................

As the end of summer approaches I can feel the collective energy of the blog community ramp up to a nearly palpable level. It's almost comparable to the big Holiday season. Around the Holidays the community collectively gets into the Holiday spirit...everyone doing Holiday things...shopping, making things, getting together, traveling. And so it is when the end of the summer comes around. We'll find ourselves all doing similar end-of-summer stuff. Going on trips...maybe it's that long awaited vacation, or the annual road trip with a friend to a craft show, or trade show. Or maybe this is your time to get creative and make stuff. The approaching Fall and it's transformative powers have got you designing new fashions for your shop...or knitting a new scarf for your cool weather wardrobe.
Well that's what I noticed when I was reading the latest posts or checking out the newest shop listings from the bloggers and talented makers you see above. I felt right in step with what they've got going on...all them. Despite the diversity of talents, themes, stories...I could feel a very similar energy. We're all boldly, brightly, and collectively moving on to the next stage of our own awesomeness. And it's a thrill to share the experience. So please...do yourself a favor and check out what these movers, shakers, makers, and picture takers are up to. You'll feel like you're right at home and like you're taking flight from the comforts of the nest...all at the same time!
Oh, and be sure to use their discount codes! They love when you do that!

Summer Pastels

Summer Pastels 2

I love colourful interiors ~ especially in a beach house.

A weekender or a beach house should embody the holiday spirit
and have a sense of fun about it.

However, I also think it's important to control the colour
so it doesn't feel hectic, overwhelming or mismatched.

Sticking to a maximum of 2 or 3 highlight colours
against a backdrop of white or neutrals is always a safe bet.

These pretty sorbet shades look a treat in a summer.

Save a Bunch and Pack Your Lunch! (2nd Edition)

Posted by om 0 comments
It’s that time of year again… back to school (up until college those were the worst words to hear)! Anyway, back to school means back to routine, which for many, can be a very positive thing when it comes to diet quality. In addition to making sure your child eats breakfast, has healthy snacks, and a well-balanced dinner, make sure they have a healthy lunch! One of my biggest tips to both children and adults is to PACK YOUR LUNCH!

I recommend you make buying lunch a special treat for your child, just as eating out should be a treat for adults and NOT the norm. If your child is old enough, teach them how to prepare a healthy lunch, so that way even if you are too busy to make it, your child can do it themselves. Packing lunch will create autonomy for your child, while also teaching them the life skills of how to prepare a healthy meal. Furthermore, if your child makes their own lunch, they will be way more inclined to eat it!!! I began packing my lunch around age 7 (my mom will confirm), and I can tell you, I have packed my lunch and snacks almost every day since!

Another benefit of packing lunch is the amount of money you will save. If your child gets just the school lunch every day, you may only be spending $2.35-$4/day… but if they buy a-la-carte items, those prices can add up very quickly. Some of my adult clients estimate they spend up to $2,000/year on eating out for just lunch! Furthermore, not to knock school lunches, but a lot of the options are cheese and fat-laden, and not as healthy as a homemade sandwich.
A healthy lunch should include a whole grain, lean protein, fruit, and ideally some form of dairy or dairy equivalent. There is no need for a child to have “dessert” after every meal, so don’t get them into this habit. A treat could be fruit or low-fat yogurt, and once a week something more indulgent. Below are some ideas for healthy and fun lunches for your children.

HEALTHY & FUN LUNCH IDEAS:
  • Chicken or turkey sandwich: 100% whole wheat bread w/ low-sodium lean meat, 1 slice reduced-fat Swiss cheese, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber.
  • Pizza roll-up: Whole wheat tortilla or Flat Out w/ 2 tbsp pizza sauce, 3 tbsp part-skim shredded mozzarella, baby spinach, tomatoes, and a few thin slices of chicken.
  • Strawberries & cream pita: ½ cup sliced strawberries, 1 tbsp. low-sugar strawberry jam & 1/3 c part-skim ricotta cheese inside a whole wheat pita
  • Ham roll-up: Ham, reduced-fat Swiss cheese, apple slices & spinach inside a whole wheat tortilla w/ mustard and/or olive oil mayo.
  • Tuna & Avocado pita: Mash canned (no-salt added) Albacore tuna w/ avocado- put inside pita with sliced cucumber & other veggies. Add spices as desired.
  • Cold quinoa & tofu salad: Mix ½ c cooked quinoa, 1 cup mixed Italian veggies (can use frozen), 2-3 oz tofu, and light-balsamic dressing in Tupperware container.
  • Parfait: Mix cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt with fruit and high-fiber cereal
Sides: For any of these meals be sure to include all of the following:
  • 1 fruit (1/2 c- 1 c)
  • Low-fat yogurt (like Chobani Champions or champions tubes, Stonyfield, etc)
  • Side of veggies (can pair with hummus or other low-fat dip)
Note: You can substitute any lean protein for any mentioned above (low-sodium turkey, ham, chicken, pork tenderloin, fish, tofu, edamame, etc).

So, in the end you will be saving a bunch of calories and money by packing your own lunch and having your child pack their lunch. It won't take very long, and in the end, the payoff is huge. Getting into good eating habits from an early age will make your child more likely to keep them throughout adulthood.
